Tahunanui Kindergarten

53 Muritai Street,   Tahunanui
A word from the teachers….

As teachers, we are passionate about developing social and physical competence in young children.

We will support your child to learn many of the skills which are essential for academic learning. We call these 'foundation skills.' Skills such as persisting, problem solving, trying out ideas, how to get along with others.

The large outdoor environment enables us to offer a wide range of activities for children to develop their physical skills and confidence; this has a direct correlation to brain development and their academic learning.

Flexible, moveable equipment ensures we provide appropriate physical challenges for children from the day they start Kindergarten to the day they leave.

We underpin our programme with clear and positive expectations that help develop social competence in children.

During their time at kindergarten children build positive relationships with each other and are encouraged to consider others in their play.

Teachers recognise children’s individual interests and foster these in a variety of ways.

Specialist teachers visit regularly.

We provide a comprehensive transition to school programme and work closely with Tahunanui School to achieve this.

Children leave kindergarten having become very familiar with the school environment and the new entrant teacher.

At Tahunanui Kindergarten we believe sustainability is important. Children see and participate in practices which promote caring for the environment, ranging from recycling and worm farming to re-using rainwater.

What else do parents say?

"As both Parents and Teachers, we have been blown away with Tahuna Kindergarten. It provides a safe, consistent environment where children gain resilency and the necessary social skills to start primary school. The consistancy from staff is outstanding. They all sing from the same song and show unity in their approach with all the tamariki" Vairi & Tim Hikuroa

"Great Teachers, great position next to school, great range of equipment and activities to challenge and entertain. All teachers are fully qualified. Wonderful environment for my children."
Parent Satisfaction Survey

"Being a busy parent is an understatement in our household, with four children under 8 and 2 working parents. I needed to know that my tamariki, we're getting the best in early childhood care. After a considerable amount of investigating and observations we chose Tahunanui kindergarten. Tahuna kindy stood out from not only other preschools in the area but also other kindergartens within the Nelson region!! Teachers greet both children and parents upon arriving(believe it or not, this is not the experience we have had in all centers) this to our whanua is important as it teaches our children that we are all equal and valued. The quality of having fully qualified
and expirenced teaches shows and is evident in the children, behavioural issues are delt with effectively and respectfully, children are not belittled or made to feel undervalued, which I have also expierenced in other centers. I would have no hesitation in recommending Tahunanui kindergarten to anyone wanting quality education for their children. Hollie Pluck

Children and families are welcome to visit us anytime.
