Information for Students / Studying ECE
If you are thinking of becoming an early childhood teacher, here’s some useful information to get you started.
There are many providers of ECE teaching qualifications and pathways to teaching in New Zealand. The base qualification is generally a Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) or a Post Graduate Diploma in ECE.
Visit the TeachNZ website to search their database of education providers and see what might work best for you. https://www.teachnz.govt.nz/studying-to-be-a-teacher/choosing-the-right-course/.
Another useful website for further information is the Teaching Council of New Zealand https://teachingcouncil.nz/
Many courses require you to either be undertaking some work in ECE or volunteering for a number of hours per week. Nelson Tasman Kindergartens is happy to help you in finding a host Kindergarten as a student (or even before you have decided on your course) however there are some security checks that need to happen first.
Suitable forms of ID are: A NZ birth certificate issued on or after 1998 OR a passport AND a NZ driver licence. If the ID are in different names we need to sight your marriage certificate or statutory declaration. A particulars of marriage is not suitable ID.
Please contact [email protected] if you have any further questions or need clarification on the ID requirements.

- If you are a currently enrolled student (either coming to us on practicum OR one of our Kindergartens is your home centre), you need to provide us with two forms of ID to confirm your identity BEFORE you are spending time in the Kindergarten.
- If you are thinking about further study but want to come to us first as a volunteer, we require a clear police vet AND the ID requirements, as well as the completion of some safety questions. The police vet process can take up to a month, so we recommend you begin that as soon as possible. You will not be able to be in the Kindergarten until these requirements are met.
- If you are a high school student on a gateway programme your school gateway coordinator needs to supply us with copies of your school ID and a short reference.
