Our tamariki really enjoy the legend of how the Boulder Bank was made and Matua Madsen often tells this story during our Kapa Haka sessions, so it was amazing to be able to go on a bus trip to the Boulder Bank and listen to the legend being told and sing some waiata.

Olympics Day

We embraced the Olympics, celebrating our medal winners each mat time and talking about the different sports they were competing in.  We had a map of the world up on the wall with the flags of the different competing countries.  The Getting Ready for School group did different activities like decorating both the Olympic flag and the New Zealand flag and drawing and writing about what sport they would like to compete in if they went to the Olympics. We also set up different activities in the playground for the children to explore - weightlifting, hurdles, long jump into the sandpit and ‘horse riding’.  To finish our focus we held our own Richmond Kindergarten Olympic day.

Picture
Picture

Picture
We had five teams representing countries that have connections with our families - Cook Islands, Thailand, England, India and New Zealand with the children encouraged to dress in the colours and their chosen group.  We had our opening ceremony where we marched with our countries flag behind the Olympic torch to the sand pit where the flame glowed throughout the games surrounded by the flags.

The children moved around in their groups and tried out rhythmic and floor gymnastics, equestrian, rowing, weightlifting, sprints, javelin, long jump, shot put and hurdles.

The children very proudly received their medals at the medal ceremony in front of the many proud whanau supporters and we finished off our day with a shared lunch with many delicious choices to eat.  A huge thank you to all the parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles and siblings who came along to share this day
