Nelson District Free Kindergarten Association trading as
Nelson Tasman Kindergartens
The first Kindergarten in Nelson was established at Nelson South in 1948, followed by Bridge Street, Richmond and Stoke soon after.
These Kindergartens were established by volunteers who believed that all children have the right to high quality education.
Kindergartens were established by communities, for communities throughout the Nelson Tasman region.
These Kindergartens existed because of the passion of parents and community leaders, and the hard work of
fundraising committees, families and teachers.
Thousands of children have passed through the doors of Kindergarten on their way to further learning and successes – Kindergarten in Nelson has been a strong foundation for countless life journeys.
Now the Association consists of 20 kindergartens and centres.

The benefits of an Association...
The Association ensures that all kindergartens and centres are of the highest quality and well resourced.
Ideas are shared throughout the Association so that each kindergarten benefits not just from the great ideas of the teachers working there, but from the combined wealth of experience of the 150 teachers that work for the Association.
Administrators and Teacher Aides help the teaching teams to do what they do best - providing young children with the best possible start in life for their future hopes and dreams.
Kindergartens also benefit from the support and advice of the Senior Education Advisors, the Management Team, the Board and the Association Office.
