Biculturalism

Te Reo Māori

New Zealand is the home of te reo Māori and Māori culture. Te Whāriki guides us to make te reo and ngā tikanga Māori visible and valued for children of all cultural backgrounds, while respecting the aspirations of their whānau.

Since being recognised as an official language in 1987, te reo Māori has grown in strength and visibility. As early childhood educators, we honour our responsibility to uphold both partners of Aotearoa New Zealand’s dual heritage — Māori and Pākehā — so tamariki learn in an environment of respect and belonging.
