Welcome to Tāhunanui Kindergarten
At Tāhunanui Kindergarten, we offer a rich and active learning environment where tamariki are encouraged to explore, challenge themselves, and grow. Our spacious outdoor area supports all areas of development — especially physical, social, and emotional — and gives tamariki the freedom to move, play, and build confidence every day.
We run regular Physical Fun sessions at nearby Burrell Park, designed especially for our oldest tamariki. These fun, focused sessions build confidence, body awareness, and coordination, while also supporting essential school-readiness skills like listening, following instructions, and using positional language. These foundations help strengthen oral language and early literacy.
Our flexible equipment and thoughtfully designed environment ensure that tamariki of all ages can challenge themselves in ways that are right for them — from their first day through to their transition to school. Throughout it all, we focus on building social competence, supporting every child to feel confident, capable, and connected.
Our Team
-
At Tāhunanui Kindergarten, we are a community of learners where tamariki, whānau, and kaiako build strong, positive relationships that nurture a sense of belonging. Together, we grow confident, competent lifelong learners.
Here, you’ll see tamariki exploring and learning through play, supported by kaiako who work alongside each tamaiti in ways that foster their development. You’ll notice a shared respect for the environment, with both kaiako and tamariki actively caring for the world around them, and whānau warmly engaged and involved in everyday kindergarten life.
You’ll hear conversations full of curiosity and connection — including te reo Māori, singing, music, stories, and the joyful sounds of laughter and ako.
Most of all, you’ll feel it: a welcoming, safe, and inclusive atmosphere where every child and whānau member is valued, accepted, and supported to thrive.
-
Nestled in the heart of the Tāhunanui community, our kindergarten sits alongside Tāhunanui School and Burrell Park, offering rich connections to the wider community and easy access to expansive green space.
Our thoughtfully designed outdoor environment includes moveable equipment that supports gross motor development, while planted nooks and gardens inspire sensory-rich, nature-based play and exploration.
-
At Tāhunanui Kindergarten, we recognise that every child is on their own unique learning journey. Our kaiako create experiences that support social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development in meaningful, engaging ways.
Social learning happens through everyday play as tamariki practise turn-taking, sharing, cooperation, and problem-solving. These interactions build empathy, confidence, and emotional awareness.
Early literacy is nurtured through rich language experiences — including conversations, storytelling, music, dance, drama, and creative expression. Children are encouraged to experiment with writing and mark-making, while te reo Māori is woven naturally throughout the day. Physical activities support the motor skills needed for early writing.
Maths and science are explored through puzzles, construction, water and sand play, and activities that involve comparing, grouping, and counting. Our spacious outdoor setting and local excursions give tamariki hands-on opportunities to explore the natural world and learn through discovery.
Te Rito – He Māpuna te Tamaiti
We offer a specialised programme for children aged 2 to 3½ years that is flexible, responsive, and grounded in the principles of Te Whāriki. At this age, tamariki are full of energy and curiosity. They are developing an understanding of the world by testing boundaries, exploring cause and effect, and learning through imitation. Their emotions can be intense and unpredictable, and they learn best through movement, play, and real experiences.
Our programme is designed to support these needs. Using He Māpuna te Tamaiti as a foundation, we create a mana-enhancing, culturally responsive learning environment where positive interactions and strong relationships are central. Whānau are valued partners in this journey, and together we support each child’s wellbeing, identity, and learning in ways that are nurturing and empowering.
Harakeke – Growing Learner Identity
We are also focused on supporting tamariki to grow a strong sense of themselves as capable, confident learners. This has led us to explore Habits of Mind, a framework developed by Art Costa and Bena Kallick that outlines 16 patterns of thinking to help children approach real-life situations thoughtfully and creatively.
These habits encourage children to reflect, persist, communicate clearly, take responsible risks, and work with others — all qualities that help shape strong, positive learner identities. You’ll see this language being used with tamariki and reflected in their learning stories. These habits also guide our planning, ensuring that each child’s learning is supported in ways that align with their strengths, interests, and individual learning pathways.

Nau mai, haere mai – a big welcome to all tamariki and whānau.
At Tāhunanui Kindergarten, children can begin their learning journey with us from the age of two. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 2:45pm, for all children over two years old. Our kindergarten operates from mid-January through to late December, with breaks during the school holidays and over the Christmas period.
Before your child officially starts, we encourage three settling visits. These help tamariki feel comfortable in their new environment and give you time to build a relationship with their key teacher — supporting a smooth and positive transition into kindergarten life.
We look forward to meeting you and sharing our wonderful kindergarten with you.
