Welcome to Birchwood Kindergarten

At Birchwood Kindergarten, we nurture warm, responsive relationships between teachers, tamariki, whānau, and the wider community. Positive guidance is modelled in a respectful, caring way, supporting children to develop emotional competence. As a result, tamariki grow into independent, calm, trusting, and capable learners.

Our magnificent outdoor learning environment, surrounded by established trees and open spaces, invites exploration, challenge, and discovery. It’s a place where tamariki connect with nature and grow as kaitiaki — guardians of the environment — developing a deep appreciation for the natural world.

The concept of kaitiakitanga underpins our philosophy. This traditional Māori worldview encourages the safeguarding of our future through conservation, replenishment, and sustainable practices.

As an Enviroschool, we are committed to operating sustainably and caring for our environment. These values guide our decisions — from the way we run our kindergarten, to the learning experiences we offer, and the resources we use.

  • “I looked at many daycares and none of them felt homely enough for me to feel comfortable leaving my child. As soon as I walked into Birchwood kindergarten I thought this is it. This is perfect.”

  • “Overall very impressed with how they run their kindy and support children and parents.”

  • “I guess Birchwood was a bit of a stab in the dark for us as not having any experience with any kindy before, but we are really happy with the choice.”

Our Team

  • We believe that through play, tamariki grow vital skills like communication, curiosity, resilience, emotional strength, and social awareness. These foundations help every child become a confident and capable learner, ready to step into school and life with excitement and courage.

Our environment is shaped by the strong, authentic partnership between kaiako, whānau, and the wider community. Together, we create a space where belonging, inclusion, and shared purpose flourish. Guided by Te Whāriki, we embrace values like manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, whanaungatanga, exploration, belonging, and Vā — the special space that nurtures deep connections and relationships.

We believe in upholding the mana of every child and whānau, empowering tamariki to know they are an important part of our vibrant learning community. Their voices are heard, their strengths celebrated, and their contributions inspire everyone to grow and learn together.

  • Birchwood Kindergarten boasts a beautiful outdoor learning environment, enriched by mature trees, open spaces, an edible garden, and the natural world’s wonders. This inviting space encourages tamariki to explore, challenge themselves, and connect deeply with nature, sparking curiosity and growth.

Here, children grow as kaitiaki—guardians of the land—learning to care for and respect Papatūānuku. The Māori concept of kaitiakitanga, which honours stewardship, conservation, and sustainability, forms the heart of our philosophy. It guides our everyday choices and long-term vision.

As a proud Enviroschool, Birchwood Kindergarten is committed to operating in harmony with the environment. We thoughtfully consider our learning programme, resources, and daily practices to nurture sustainable habits and inspire a lifelong love and respect for the natural world.

  • At Birchwood Kindergarten, our philosophy comes alive through meaningful connections and experiences that support tamariki to grow as confident, capable learners.

    • Active Little Learners
Each week, tamariki enjoy movement-based sessions with Active Little Learners Charitable Trust. These fun and inclusive activities help build confidence, coordination, and resilience through play.

    • Kapa Haka and Library Visits
Small groups regularly visit Birchwood School to participate in kapa haka and explore the school library. These visits nurture cultural confidence, familiarity with new environments, and a love of learning.

    • Kura Club – Transition to School
Our oldest tamariki join Kura Club in the months before starting school. This purposeful programme supports their readiness and emotional wellbeing for this important step.

    • Birchwood School Connections
New entrant classes from Birchwood School visit weekly for play sessions, giving tamariki the chance to reconnect with friends, kaiako, and familiar spaces—helping to ease their transition to school.

  • Most sessions are free under the Ministry of Education’s 20 Hours ECE policy. Some fees may apply for additional hours or children under two. Family contributions are requested to cover extra activities.

  • Nau mai, haere mai – a big welcome to all tamariki and whānau.

At Birchwood Kindergarten, children can begin their learning journey with us from the age of two. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 2:45pm, for all children over two years old. Our kindergarten operates from mid-January through to late December, with breaks during the school holidays and over the Christmas period.

Before your child officially starts, we encourage three settling visits. These help tamariki feel comfortable in their new environment and give you time to build a relationship with their key teacher — supporting a smooth and positive transition into kindergarten life.

We look forward to meeting you and sharing our wonderful kindergarten with you
