Welcome to Richmond Kindergarten
At Richmond Kindergarten, we provide a supportive and inclusive environment that nurtures the emotional, cognitive, physical, and social development of every tamaiti.
We celebrate the rich diversity of our kindergarten whānau, weaving te reo Māori, New Zealand Sign Language, and other home languages into our daily programme. Kaiako work in partnership with whānau to create learning experiences that recognise the unique strengths of each child and support their journey towards excellence.
Individual planning is guided by the strands of Te Whāriki, Aotearoa’s early childhood curriculum, ensuring a thoughtful and holistic approach to learning.
Located just down from Richmond Mall in the heart of the community, our kindergarten enjoys strong, positive relationships with all local primary schools — supporting smooth, confident transitions for our tamariki.
Our Team
-
At Richmond Kindergarten, our whānau work together to unfold the potential and uniqueness of every learner by valuing whanaungatanga, empowering mana, and encouraging a deep connection to aotūroa — the wider world.
We believe that relationships sit at the heart of everything we do. Whanaungatanga guides our daily practice as we take the time to genuinely engage with tamariki and their whānau, learning about their stories, strengths, and aspirations. We recognise and support each child's uniqueness, and welcome every whānau with warmth, respect, and without judgement.
We understand and honour difference, listen deeply, and offer support through life’s challenges. Respectful relationships are role-modelled by kaiako and nurtured among tamariki. We encourage strong connections between children and create opportunities for whānau to connect within our kindergarten community.
Where needed, we also work with external professionals to ensure that tamariki and their whānau receive the support they need to thrive.
-
Richmond Kindergarten has been a cherished part of the community for over 60 years, proudly standing as the first kindergarten in the area. Our expansive outdoor space is home to well-established trees that provide welcome shade during the summer months, creating a calm and inviting place for tamariki to play and explore.
Our gardens are full of seasonal produce, offering tamariki the joy of harvesting and tasting what they’ve helped grow. Indoors, the kindergarten features a spacious, light-filled environment with a variety of engaging areas where tamariki can explore, create, and learn through play.
-
At Richmond Kindergarten, we create an environment where tamariki feel safe to try new things, take risks, and practice skills over time — building confidence, independence, and a strong sense of self. Our kaiako support children to foster friendships, strengthen motor skills, understand their place in the wider world, and develop the resilience needed to cope with change. We encourage persistence, curiosity, and a willingness to have a go.
As tamariki grow, our Getting Ready for School group provides our four-year-olds with opportunities to explore more structured learning experiences in a way that feels natural and empowering. This includes activities that build number and letter recognition, oral language and listening skills, physical coordination, and a positive attitude toward learning. Tamariki are supported to revisit knowledge, build on their experiences, and strengthen the social and emotional skills that support a smooth transition to school.
At the heart of our programme is a strong focus on relationships. Kaiako build secure, nurturing connections with tamariki and their whānau, ensuring each child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn. Our curriculum includes perceptual motor activities to support physical development and school readiness, and we make full use of our natural outdoor spaces to extend learning and exploration. Programmes are thoughtfully developed around the interests of tamariki, helping them build concentration, perseverance, and the confidence to take on new challenges.
Tamariki at Richmond Kindergarten learn best when they feel happy, secure, and engaged. Through play — whether loud or quiet, messy or tidy, silly or serious — they experience the joy of learning. They play on their own or with others, developing independence, teamwork, and the confidence to ask for help when they need it.
At Richmond Kindergarten, tamariki discover that learning is fun — and that their potential is limitless.

Most sessions are free under the Ministry of Education’s 20 Hours ECE policy. Some fees may apply for additional hours or children under two. Family contributions are requested to cover extra activities.

Nau mai, haere mai – a big welcome to all tamariki and whānau.
At Richmond Kindergarten, children can begin their learning journey with us from the age of two. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 2:45pm. Our kindergarten operates all year but closed four teacher only days spread across the year and over the Christmas period.
Before your child officially starts, we encourage three settling visits. These help tamariki feel comfortable in their new environment and give you time to build a relationship with their kaiako — supporting a smooth and positive transition into kindergarten life.
We look forward to meeting you and sharing our wonderful kindergarten with you.
