Welcome to Motueka Kindergarten
Motueka Kindergarten is led by a passionate team of kaiako and dedicated support staff who are committed to providing a rich, high-quality learning experience for all tamariki.
Our teaching is guided by Te Whāriki, Aotearoa’s Early Childhood Curriculum, and enriched by the aspirations of Kahikatea and the values of the Enviroschools programme.
At the heart of our curriculum is a philosophy grounded in the principles of ako (reciprocal learning), aroha (love and compassion), and tangata whenuatanga (affirming Māori learners as Māori). We are committed to empowering tamariki (whakamana), building strong relationships with whānau and the wider community (whanaungatanga), supporting well-being (mana atua), and nurturing the holistic development of every child (kotahitanga).
Our Team
-
At Motueka Kindergarten, our philosophy is grounded in the values of ako (reciprocal learning), aroha (love and compassion), whanaungatanga (relationships), whakamana (empowerment), mana atua (wellbeing), kotahitanga (holistic development), and tangata whenuatanga (affirming Māori learners as Māori).
We honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our daily practice and celebrate Te Ao Māori through te reo, tikanga, and our local iwi connections. We value Papatūānuku and embed sustainable, nature-connected practices that foster kaitiakitanga in our tamariki.
We are deeply committed to building strong, respectful relationships with whānau. Tamariki grow in a space where their identity is affirmed, their culture is celebrated, and they feel a strong sense of belonging.
We proudly embrace and celebrate the rich cultural diversity of our community. Special events like Matariki, Samoan and Tongan Language Weeks, Diwali, Holi, Chinese New Year and more are acknowledged and shared with whānau through kai, stories, music, and traditions.
How We Bring Our Values to Life
Ako: Tamariki, kaiako, and whānau learn from and with each other through play, kōrero, and shared experiences.
Aroha: We nurture warm, respectful relationships and support tamariki as they navigate emotions and social skills.
Tangata Whenuatanga: Te reo and tikanga Māori are woven into daily life, reflecting our connection to local iwi and whakapapa.
Whakamana: Children are empowered to lead their learning, take risks, and express themselves with confidence.
Whanaungatanga: Whānau are welcomed and involved; we value open communication and shared celebrations.
Mana Atua: Wellbeing is central—rituals, routines, and care practices support each child holistically.
Kotahitanga: Learning is holistic, integrated, and responsive to each tamaiti’s individual strengths and needs.

Whanaungatanga – Warm, Caring Relationships with Whānau and Community
Our passionate kaiako and support staff create a welcoming, inclusive space where tamariki feel seen, safe, and valued. Relationships are at the heart of everything we do — respectful, responsive, and nurturing connections between kaiako, tamariki, and whānau help to foster a true sense of belonging and community. We celebrate culture and individuality, and build strong partnerships with families to support each child’s unique learning journey.
Play-Based, Child-Led Learning in a Safe and Stimulating Environment
Our curriculum is centred on learning through play. Tamariki are supported with a mix of structured and open-ended experiences that encourage creativity, curiosity, cooperation, and independence. Our thoughtfully designed outdoor area includes a large sandpit, inviting open play spaces, and access to the neighbouring school field — offering endless opportunities for movement, discovery, and connection with the natural world.
Mana Atua – Supporting Wellbeing and Social-Emotional Growth
We prioritise the emotional and social wellbeing of every tamaiti. Kaiako guide tamariki to recognise and express their feelings, build empathy, and navigate friendships and challenges with confidence. We actively model and teach respectful communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution. With clear, consistent boundaries and a nurturing environment, we help tamariki grow into confident, kind, and resilient learners.
Intentional Teaching Through Tamariki Interests
Kaiako are attuned to the emerging interests of our tamariki and use these as the foundation for intentional, engaging learning experiences. Whether it's science investigations, baking, exploring nature, or testing working theories, each activity is hands-on, meaningful, and designed to extend curiosity and understanding. By following children’s interests, we nurture their love of learning and support their individual strengths and development.
-
Most sessions are free under the Ministry of Education’s 20 Hours ECE policy. Some fees may apply for additional hours or children under two. Family contributions are requested to cover extra activities.

Nau mai, haere mai – a big welcome to all tamariki and whānau.
At Motueka Kindergarten, children can begin their learning journey with us from the age of two. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm, for all children over two years old. Our kindergarten operates from mid-January through to late December. We remain open during school breaks but do close for the Christmas holidays.
Before your child officially starts, we encourage three settling visits. These help tamariki feel comfortable in their new environment and give you time to build a relationship with their key teacher — supporting a smooth and positive transition into kindergarten life.
We look forward to meeting you and sharing our wonderful kindergarten with you.
