For 50 years, Birchwood Kindergarten has been part of the Stoke community, providing a place for tamariki to learn, play and grow. Generations of tamariki and whānau have passed through its gates, each becoming part of the kindergarten's story.
While much has changed over the years, the sense of community remains at the heart of Birchwood.
Head Teacher Purdie Campbell says “It's the connections between families that make the kindergarten so special today. Families enjoy spending time together, supporting one another and getting involved in the events that bring the community together.”
From much-loved traditions such as the wheelathon, discos and Christmas parties to more recent Matariki evening celebrations, these events create opportunities for whānau to connect and make memories together.
The kindergarten's spacious grounds have also provided opportunities for growing, harvesting and sharing kai. As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, a new fruit tree will be planted as a gift for future generations of tamariki to enjoy and care for.
The anniversary gathering on Thursday 5 November will bring past and present families, tamariki and staff together to celebrate the milestone, share memories and reconnect. The celebration will also include a special waiata performance from current tamariki.
As Birchwood looks ahead to the next chapter, it's the sense of connection and belonging that continues to make it such a special place.
